How to Prevent Tooth Erosion
A common dental problem among our Troy cosmetic dentistry patients is tooth erosion. The outer layer of the teeth is called enamel. Enamel protects the teeth from normal every day wear and tear that result from eating and drinking. The enamel of the teeth is the strongest substance in the body. Though incredibly strong, enamel in the teeth can be worn down by acid and bacteria commonly found in the mouth, among other causes. Gradually over time, normal wear and tear, acid, and bacteria erode the enamel of the teeth which results in tooth erosion. If tooth erosion progresses to an advanced stage, irreversible damage may result. Because of this, it is essential for our Troy tooth erosion patients to understand how to prevent tooth erosion from occurring and to treat it once it has occurred.
What Causes Tooth Erosion?
Many of our dental patients in Troy have experienced some degree of tooth erosion. There are several causes of tooth erosion. Some of the foods that make up a healthy diet are high in acidic content, which contributes to the erosion of the tooth’s enamel. Some of these foods include oranges, tomatoes, and lemons. The consumption of energy drinks, fruit juices, beer, and carbonated beverages also causes erosion of the enamel. High exposure to chlorine in swimming pools can cause rapid tooth erosion. Some medications when taken in powder form or are chewed can cause tooth erosion, as well as certain medical conditions. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, bulimia, and dry mouth are some of the many medical conditions that may contribute to tooth erosion.
How Do I Prevent Tooth Erosion?
While there are many causes of tooth erosion, it can be prevented. Teeth weakened by the effects of tooth erosion are more susceptible to tooth decay, which leads to the formation of dental caries. While damage caused by tooth erosion cannot be reversed, it may be possible to prevent tooth erosion by making changes in your diet and maintaining proper oral hygiene. Many of our patients in Troy prevent tooth erosion by following these simple steps:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled tooth brush and with tooth paste containing fluoride
- Rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming beverages or foods with a high acidic content
- Wait at least twenty minutes after consuming foods and beverages high in acidic content before brushing your teeth
- Floss at least once a day
- Make dietary changes so that foods and beverages that are high in acidic content are consumed in moderation
- Always undergo routine dental checkups and dental cleanings
- Seek medical care for any condition that may contribute to tooth erosion
- Do not use any tobacco products
- Chew sugar-free gum
- Seek treatment for chronic dry mouth
